It’s mango season in many parts of the world! Back home in Florida, my parents have a mango tree that’s fruiting really well! But with a heavy storm, a bunch of mangos fell to the ground without fully ripening. I couldn’t let good mangoes go to waste, so I made us a really refreshing snack using the green mangoes! If you are buying mangoes in the grocery store, choose one that hasn’t fully ripened yet. I mixed the tangy pieces in with some red onion, chickpeas and indian chaat masala. Chaat masala is a tangy spice blend that is made usually by mixing black salt (kala namak), cumin, red chili powder, and sometimes dried mango powder (aamchur). So if you don’t have chaat masala, you could simply use cumin powder and red chili powder. But the black salt and amchur really adds a special tang. Make this for guests or just for a healthy snack. I’m sure you’re going to love it!
You will need:
- 1 green mango (ours were relatively small, so you may need only 1/2 a green mango)
- 1 can of chickpeas
- 1 small red onion (or half a large one)
- 1 lime
- chaat masala
- red chili powder
- cumin
- 1 jalapeno seeded
- cilantro to garnish
To Prepare:
- Drain and rinse a can of chickpeas and add to a mixing bowl
- Next, cut the green mango into small cubes. Green mangos are cut very differently from ripe mangos. You’ll first need to peel the skin, then cut a slice one third in, trying to avoid the pitt. Do the same on the other side. Cut around the pitt, and you should now be able to dice up the mango. Add this to the mixing bowl.
- Finely dice half a red onion.
- Squeeze in the juice of 1 full lime.
- Season with 1 tsp chaat masala, 1 tsp cumin powder, and 1/2 tsp red chili powder.
- Make sure to season well with salt.
- Add finely chopped cilantro.
- Mix really well, taste for seasoning and let this mixture sit for at least 15-20 minutes. When you let it sit before serving it allows the flavors to really marinate nicely.
- Serve!
